Updated fever policy, reminders, photos and plenty of community news

Dear MA Families & Friends,

Re-Enrolment due Friday

Re-Enrolment for the 2019-2020 School Year is due this Friday, February 15.  If your child’s re-enrolment has not been received by this date, we cannot guarantee placement for September 2019 as there are applicants waiting for space at the school.  If you have questions regarding re-enrolment or tuition, please contact Victoria at vlittle@montessori.on.ca or 519-433-9121 ext. 211.

Updated fever policy

Recently we re-examined how our school policy on fevers is combined with the two other illness symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea. Following London Middlesex Health Unit recommendations and the practices of other daycare providers in the city, we have pulled fevers out of this combination to remove the exclusion parameter, depending on the child’s temperature. Yellow highlights below indicate the changes.

This has been updated in the Parent Handbook for 2019-2020 that is available as a PDF on our website, and will be updated in the 2019-2020 printed Year at a Glance calendar for September 2019.

A good read

For over 100 years Montessori education has provided children the foundation for academic success and the skills required to study, work and thrive in the 21st century. Qualities like Professor Yuval Noah Harari’s “4 C’s –  critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity” – are supported by traditional Montessori education!

Casa One blends art & music beautifully

This month, Casa One discovered that listening to music makes us feel different emotions and sets our mood. A song speaks not only in words but also with emotional expression. It is a universal language which unites people through human emotions. Music can make us feel happy, sad or scared. It can make you want to dance and sing, or be quiet and dream.

A repertoire of musical pieces inspired our class to look at how music makes us feel and how art can be a reflection of different emotions. The children listened to various types of music and used colours to express how each particular song made them feel. The children were very enthusiastic with the art project and thoroughly enjoyed learning about music, art and emotions.

Waterloo Casa indoor play time

When Mother Nature is feeling grumpy and keeping us indoors for too long, we head to the gym for some scootering! Check out the video on our Facebook page:

UE trip to the Elgin Heritage Centre

On Friday, the Year Six students got the opportunity to visit the Elgin County Heritage Centre in St. Thomas. During our visit, we were able to learn more about the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. We got a chance to make small pieces of chain mail and learned about how the chain mail protected knights. We also got to make coins which we learned that medieval people would trade for other items such as animals. We did brass rubbings and made catapults made of Popsicle sticks, elastics and spoons. We were then able to shoot at a Medieval castle. Towards the end of the day, we were able to learn about Jumbo the elephant and about St. Thomas. We really enjoyed our trip!

Junior High’s Lunar New Year celebration

Chopstick expert Rob came over to JH last week to give a lesson on proper chopstick technique and put the students through some fun activities to improve their chopstick chops!  We put our new skills to the test by eating the most delicious dumplings we have ever tasted! They were hand made at So Inviting on Dundas St. especially for our JH community. We highly recommend it!

Yoga at Junior High

Our Junior high students participated in a yoga class on Monday afternoon led by a teacher from Modo Yoga Studio.

MA in the community!

Tina and several of our Junior High students attended the annual Breakfast for YOU, in support of Youth Opportunities Unlimited. It’s always an inspiring event that provides context on the challenges many teens in our community face – and how YOU helps them.
