Dear MA Families & Friends,

Re-enrolment for the 2023-2024 school year opened last week on Friday and is due by Friday, February 10. Please login to the MA Parent Portal to confirm your child(ren)’s space for the upcoming school year. Full instructions for re-enrolment are available here, or on the “2023-2024 Re-Enrolment” resource board in the MA Parent Portal.
Reminder: Parking for pick-up and drop-off
Please help us model the Grace and Courtesy we inspire in our students by being mindful of our neighbours’ driveways. If you need a reminder about your location’s pick-up and drop-off protocols, please refer to our Parking, Drop-off and Pick-up Procedures Resource Board on the MA Parent Portal.
Our Winter Concert is Friday!
Just a reminder that our Winter Concert is THIS Friday, February 3, at Forest City Community Church at 3725 Bostwick Road from 2pm-3:30pm.
If you’re attending the Concert:
Doors will open at 1:45pm. Students will be sitting together with their classmates and teachers.
Please remember to come to the front of the auditorium to collect your child from your child’s teachers at the end of the whole performance at 3:30pm, and let the classroom teacher know you have taken your child, so they can record that your child has been picked up.
If you’re not attending and picking up BEFORE THE PERFORMANCE:
Please pick up your children before the buses leave for the FCCC.
Upper El & Junior High: buses leave at 11:30 am
Lower El & Casa: buses leave at 12:45 pm
If you’re not attending and picking up AFTER THE PERFORMANCE:
Please arrive by 3:30pm in the auditorium. The teachers will dismiss the children from inside the building by the front of the stage. Please come into the auditorium after the performance is finished, to find your child’s classroom teacher so they can record that you have picked up your child.
Office closing early on Friday
The office will close at 1:30 p.m. on Friday so that the staff can attend the Winter Concert. Only Toddler after-school care will be available on Friday. Please let your child(ren)’s teachers know if you will pick them up before the buses leave for the concert.
Readers in Casa 1
Milestone alert! The first readers were sent home in Casa 1 last week. Also, tomorrow is World Read Aloud Day – what will you be reading?
Happy Winter from Casa 2!
Our Casa 2 students are so excited about the snow! They built a beautiful snow man during play time. Happy Winter to everyone!
Casa 4 – Lunar New Year
Last Monday the children of Casa Four were completely enchanted by a presentation on the Lunar New Year by Jungwoo’s mom Yeji. We enjoyed learning about the special customs around the celebration including traditional dress, games, and food incorporated in the celebration. A special thank-you to Yeji for such a wonderful presentation.
Rhyming Words in Lower El 1
Some Year 3 students worked with rhyming words last week to help them with the creation of some beautiful poems.
Emperor Penguin in LE2
In LE2, the students are comparing their height to an emperor penguin for their studies on Antarctica!
Long Division in Lower El 3
Now that’s what we call LONG division!
A couple of UE 1 math students are diligently building 3 to the power of 6 during our exponent work… It’s 729 in case you’re wondering.
This week in Junior High…
Junior High’s’s Green Square Campaign
In our Junior High program, the students participated in the Green Square Campaign. Islamophobia is an ongoing conversation in the Junior High community as the students discuss how to combat racism within our city, country and world-wide. It is an important conversation – in the past 5 years more Muslims have been killed in Canada compared to any other G7 country.
The Junior High students showed their solidarity by wearing a 2” x 2” green square in the week leading up to January 29, the National Day of Remembrance and Action Against Islamophobia. The Green Square campaign takes place to honour and remember the lives lost in a terror attack at a Quebec City Mosque in 2017, and to take action against Islamophobia. The square symbolizes the colour of the carpets in the mosque, where the worshippers last stood to pray. We renew our call to action to challenge hatred, to challenge Islamophobia, and to keep Canada a peaceful and welcoming nation.
Junior High Lunar New Year Celebrations
Lunar New Year is a celebration celebrated by over a billion people. In Junior High, we wanted to decorate for the Lunar New Year. The decorating committee decided to meet up and decide on what to do to recognize this event. They put up paper lanterns, hung up red envelopes on the walls, put paper bunnies on the doors of the classroom, hung up a red dragon, and put up paper decorations of all 12 animals in the Lunar zodiac calendar.
One of the most incredible things that the JH did was have a chopstick lunch on Thursday of homemade garlic and sesame ramen noodles with chicken and veggie dumplings handmade by Diane from So Inviting. Our community prides itself on supporting locals.
Thanks to our moderators this week who played a variety of songs that were popular in Hong Kong, gave us a background knowledge about the different customs and traditions celebrated and ended our gatherings with quotes that were Chinese proverbs.
RIP Johnny, the gecko
Our beloved UE 1 class pet, Johnny the leopard gecko passed away this week. Johnny was a gentle creature and was loved by all. The year six students created memorials to honour our favourite reptile.

MLHU immunization deadline is March 22
MA families need to contact the Health Unit directly to update any immunizations your children have had. The suspension program for lapsed records is a MLHU initiative; the school doesn’t have any say if a family receives a notice. The suspension date for MA students is scheduled for March 22, 2023.
Detailed information about the immunization and suspension program is available on the MLHU website: https://www.healthunit.com/immunization-record-review. Families wanting to submit their immunization records or needing to schedule an appointment are encouraged to call the Health Unit at 519-663-5317.
