Casa 4 – Lunar New Year

Last Monday the children of Casa Four were completely enchanted by a presentation on the Lunar New Year by Jungwoo’s mom Yeji.  We enjoyed learning about the special customs around the celebration including traditional dress, games, and food incorporated in the celebration.  A special thank-you to Yeji for such a wonderful presentation.

This week in Junior High…

Junior High’s’s Green Square Campaign

In our Junior High program, the students participated in the Green Square Campaign. Islamophobia is an ongoing conversation in the Junior High community as the students discuss how to combat racism within our city, country and world-wide. It is an important conversation – in the past 5 years more Muslims have been killed in Canada compared to any other G7 country.
The Junior High students showed their solidarity by wearing a 2” x 2” green square in the week leading up to January 29, the National Day of Remembrance and Action Against Islamophobia. The Green Square campaign takes place to honour and remember the lives lost in a terror attack at a Quebec City Mosque in 2017, and to take action against Islamophobia. The square symbolizes the colour of the carpets in the mosque, where the worshippers last stood to pray. We renew our call to action to challenge hatred, to challenge Islamophobia, and to keep Canada a peaceful and welcoming nation.

Junior High Lunar New Year Celebrations

Lunar New Year is a celebration celebrated by over a billion people. In Junior High, we wanted to decorate for the Lunar New Year. The decorating committee decided to meet up and decide on what to do to recognize this event. They put up paper lanterns, hung up red envelopes on the walls, put paper bunnies on the doors of the classroom, hung up a red dragon, and put up paper decorations of all 12 animals in the Lunar zodiac calendar.

One of the most incredible things that the JH did was have a chopstick lunch on Thursday of homemade garlic and sesame ramen noodles with chicken and veggie dumplings handmade by Diane from So Inviting. Our community prides itself on supporting locals.

Thanks to our moderators this week who played a variety of songs that were popular in Hong Kong, gave us a background knowledge about the different customs and traditions celebrated and ended our gatherings with quotes that were Chinese proverbs.

RIP Johnny, the gecko

Our beloved UE 1 class pet, Johnny the leopard gecko passed away this week. Johnny was a gentle creature and was loved by all. The year six students created memorials to honour our favourite reptile.
