Montessori Buzz – June 7, 2022

Dear MA Families & Friends,

Family & Friends at Storybook is Thursday!

The registration form closed on May 30, but don’t worry if you didn’t fill it out. Any MA families can still join us on Thursday for this year-end social! 🙂 Registration was to provide Storybook Gardens a rough number of attendees because they’re selling food at the event this year.
Menu items will include hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken strips, fries, and other hot food items. Cold beverages and ice cream treats will also be available. The Beavertails food truck will also be open. Bring some money and an appetite! If you don’t wish to purchase food there, families are also welcomed to bring in your own food for a picnic dinner.
Reminder: there is no Extended Hours after-school care on Thursday so that all of our staff can head to the Family & Friends event after dismissal.
FYI: If the weather is not looking good for Thursday afternoon, we will send a text message to all families by noon that day, and update our social media channels.

Montessori in the community

Purple and Green Shirt Day

The school community honoured the memory of the Azfaal family on Monday. Thank you to the Junior High students who led the organization of the activities. Each classroom participated in their own way but the theme was the same: love, kindness and friendship.

MA Alumni involvement – YCCI

MA Alumnus, Esa Islam, spoke on Sunday as a founding member of the Youth Coalition Combating Islamophobia (YCCI) during the presentations marking the one-year anniversary of the attack on the Afzaal family. Esa speaks at the 20min mark.
MA alumni Safiyah Lawendy and Ayesha Islam are featured in the video YCCI put together to promote the days of remembrance and healing: https://youtu.be/qB2CIc1l3Sk
Safiyah was also featured on the CBC Kids News piece from June 3, 2022. https://www.cbc.ca/kidsnews/post/how-this-teen-is-remembering-her-friend-while-fighting-islamophobia
One of our UE students was home sick Monday but wanted to support the school’s #ourlondonfamily activities, so he designed this flag in honour of the Afzaal family. Great job, Jack.

Photos from the week

Gregory’s many years and talents

Did you know Gregory, who is retiring in June after more than 30 years with the school, makes our shelves? And as Montessori parents you know just how important the shelves are within our learning environments. Thank you, Gregory, for all you’ve done for our school and our students over the past three decades. 🙂

Plantables time!

Who’s excited about their Plantables delivery? Matteo is! Thank you to everyone who supported this year’s Plantables fundraiser. Happy Growing!

Video: Casa sewing… follow the child

How does a three year old find the hole on a button when you can’t see it? Through perseverance and determination. Three-year-olds teach us so much. They teach us to slow down, enjoy the small things in life, and to take our time and persevere when we are learning something new. Montessori writes that correcting a child’s work has a lowering of the child’s energies and interests – it is a punishment for making a mistake. This little three year old didn’t remember the pattern of up….down….up….down, every time, but she is developing  her eye hand coordination, her concentration, determination and perseverance….this is never a mistake! https://www.instagram.com/tv/CeRZq3mLM0X/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

Westmount Gym Class

Our Westmount Casa class had a great morning at the Springbank Park playground!  Our last gym class of the year was full of smiles and fresh summer air!

Alive trips – Junior High and Upper Elementary

Boy, the school was quiet last week with Junior High and Upper El both on their trips with Alive Outdoors. From all accounts, a great, transformative time was had by all! We are so fortunate to partner with such a like-minded organization as Alive Outdoors.
