Montessori Buzz – March 23, 2021
Dear MA Families & Friends,
Staffing Updates
We have a couple of staffing updates we wanted to share with the parent community, especially given that families rarely get to see our staff this year.
Bethany Payne, who works at our Oxford Casa location, began working with us in the fall as a yard supervisor. She has an extensive background working with children, and recently moved into our Classroom Assistant/Kitchen Support Staff role. In this new role, she has been working one-on-one with students through the All Kids Belong program, and also supports the lunch program; she also serves as supply staff when needed.
Tiffany Hannam, who has just completed her ECE designation, has worked at our school for many years as an Elementary yard staff member and as a Camp Discovery counsellor in the summer. Tiffany has joined our Waterloo Toddler/Casa team to support the staff members within the classrooms and help with the kitchen and lunch duties.
Congratulations to Tiffany and Bethany on your new roles!
Reminder: Report children’s absences by phone
Please call the school if your child(ren) will be absent from school for any reason. Thank you for adhering to this policy.

Because of our usual two-week March Break, we’re rarely in school on St. Patrick’s Day, so many students and staff took advantage of this unusual year….
Casa 3’s Leprechaun rocks
While the children were outside playing, a leprechaun visited Casa 3 and hid some magical rocks around the classroom! The students had to hunt for them and then wash them off to find a treasure inside!!

Skip counting in Montessori Casa
Charlie is working with the long chains and is mastering her ability to skip count by 6’s all the way to 216!! Why do we stop at 216 you may ask?? Well, 216 is the cube root of 6.
When Charlie lays out this material she will note when she reaches a square root of six by placing a square above the slightly larger tag (built in control of error) when she reaches the end of the chain the tag is slightly larger again. We place a square and a cube at the end. If we were to bend and stack the chain all up it would make 6 squares (because it’s the 6 chain) and the 6 squares would make a cube!
Later on in Charlie’s math career she will be able to recall this piece of work and her knowledge to help her better understand squaring and cubing of numbers.
Maria Montessori was one smart lady!!! (And so is Charlie.) View the video of Charlie hard at work on our Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/p/CMfRDntHoU_/
