Choir and concert shirts
Students of Year 1, Years 4-8, and Junior Choir received performance shirt letters this week. These are needed for special events, such as the Remembrance Day Assembly. If your child/ren do not have a performance shirt, please fill out the form and return it to the school with payment on or before October 4. Forms are available online as a PDF or at the Front Desk. If your child’s shirt from last year can still fit them, you do not need to purchase a new one. Download a PDF of the form here.

October is 1,000 Acts of Kindness Month

During October, Montessori Academy of London participates in a community “charitable giving” activity. For the 11th year in a row, the school will participate in the 1000 Acts of Kindness program.
Casa 3 kicked things off with their 1000 Acts of Kindness activities yesterday with a visit from a wee furry friend. In order to promote and encourage community giving, our Casa students will be supporting the London Humane Society. Over the next few weeks, students can bring in donations for this worthy cause. To educate the children on the purpose of the Society, we had a furry visitor come to our class! The students enjoyed the opportunity to pet a cute kitten and learn about how they can help the Humane Society!

Westmount Toddler’s new deck!
The teachers and the toddler students at Westmount would like to give a big thank you to Tina for our new deck that was installed over the summer. It’s nice and spacious and we absolutely love it!

Waterloo Toddler’s Fun on the Farm Social
What do you get if you cross an angry sheep and a moody cow? An animal in a baaaaaaaaad moooooood! There were no baaaaad moooods over at Waterloo on Wednesday as everyone gathered to celebrate the start of another great year. The children enjoyed shearing a sheep, feeding a pig and barn putt-putt. There was face painting, a fun farm photo board and of course some delicious food. Thank you to all the parents who helped contribute to the delicious snacks. We loved coming all together as a group and hope you did too.

The Montessori student-teacher bond
It’s the quieter moments that we sometimes take for granted. An observation from Cathy in Casa 3: “We are so proud of the relationships we develop with the students… Our classroom is a place where they feel comfortable and supported!”
Indeed, another benefit of the Montessori mixed-age classrooms is that both students and parents get to know and connect with teachers over a longer period – as many as three years in each classroom. Fortunately, our school has 60 faculty and staff who place the relationship with the students front and centre. Montessori teachers are deeply invested in observing and guiding the development of our students throughout their time at our school.

Video: Casa polishing – practical life skills
A Casa classroom without polishing is as dull as tarnished silver!! Here is one of our three-year-olds and two four-year-olds polishing glass, wood and silver. Polishing allows the child to develop their concentration while refining their ability to open bottles, use an eye dropper and complete multi-step work independently.

Year 5 Art
Year 5 students are learning about radial symmetry in the art room this week and that means a lot of repeat patterning using our natural light table – our windows!

Upper El Reforest London
The Upper Elementary classes participated in a tree planting event on September 25th, in Cantebury Park, organized by Reforest London. After a demonstration, each pair or group of three students dug each hole, planted the tree, backfilled the remaining hole with soil and created a donut of mulch around the base of the trunk. Hard work and determination throughout the morning enabled our students to plant over 40 large saplings!

Good viewing: Edutopia video
Edutopia is the website of the George Lucas Educational Foundation. It is a trusted source shining a spotlight on what works in education. This video does a lovely job outlining what makes Montessori Elementary math lessons so special.
