Montessori Buzz – Oct. 1, 2024

Dear MA Families & Friends,

Save the date: Journey to Discovery is Nov. 15

Curious about what your child experiences in the classroom? Take the Journey to Discovery on Friday, Nov. 15 from 3:30-9 p.m., and experience the Montessori classroom through your child’s eyes. We’ve condensed it into one evening in the hopes that more parents will be available to attend.
“Take a walk in your child’s shoes, see the world from their perspective
and witness some of the Montessori magic.”  ~Rick & Melanie (Cruz & Silas’ parents)
Watch for a postcard with QR code coming home this week, or reserve your spot today through this link: https://forms.gle/yn7AV3Xoh6fKFR9U8
If you receive a postcard this Friday, but have already taken the Journey to Discovery, please encourage another family in the school to join us this year! This is a valuable experience for our parents, and we find those who take it gain a deeper appreciation for Montessori education and what their children experience daily within the classroom environment.

Orange Shirt Day – JH (other classrooms)

On Monday, the Junior High community took time to honour, give respect and acknowledge Orange Shirt Day. A committee of Year 8 students ran a workshop that entailed hearing from Phyllis Webstad and Elder Survivor Larry Ahenekew. The students’ goal was to continue the conversation about an action to change behaviour for the better. We hope that through discussion and sharing, we can pass on the awareness of the past, so that the history of residential schools isn’t repeated.

Home Alone program wraps up

By Ella and Avery

The Year 5 students just finished doing a home alone  program which was taught by Kristen Crouse, the principal. The Home Alone program is all about staying home by yourself as young kids. We learned about what you do when there is a tornado, a fire and gas leaks; how to escape, and when to call 911. We learned about online safety, to never tell anyone your personal information, and to not answer the door when alone. We learned a little first aid too. This course is very useful for when you leave your kid home alone! Overall, we really liked the Home Alone course and it was really helpful and fun. We even received certificates. We hope you enjoyed reading this! Thanks for reading!

Terry Fox Update

Thanks to everyone that participated and donated to the Terry Fox Run. As a school we ran 719 km and raised $697.19 (not including t-shirts). Well done Montessori Academy!

Photos from the week

Toddler flower arranging

Flower arranging is a beautiful, holistic activity that nurtures so many areas of development: fine motor skills, concentration, creativity, botanical knowledge, and it encourages care of the environment.

Toddler snack prep!

Toddler 2 prepared their morning snack bowls using their practical life skills.

Casa 4 Baking Bannock

Lessons on nutrition and food blended deliciously with lessons on Indigenous culture today as these Casa 3 students baked Bannock bread.

Westmount Casa mighty cedars

On Orange Shirt Day, the students read ‘Stand Like a Cedar’.  This book is a celebration of Indigenous language. It explores the importance of seeing ourselves as a part of the land. Today we all stood as tall as the cedars!

Year 5 wind study
