Montessori Buzz – Aug. 27, 2024

A welcome message from our Executive Director, Tina Brown

Dear MA Families,

Welcome back to the best school community in the city! We can’t wait to see our returning families and connect with parents and students who are new to MA on the first day of school, Tuesday, September 3. The fall is filled with many opportunities to engage as a community at the classroom and program level, so you are comfortable and ready for the larger school-wide events that unfold during the year.

This communication, The Buzz, is your golden ticket, the main and most important channel of communication we use at the school. It comes to your inbox every Tuesday afternoon, so set a reminder in your calendars now to read it each week!

Here are some of the things we’ve been working on over the summer:

Upgrades around the school

Thanks to our donors last year, we were able to start some of the upgrades to the Toddler yard at Westmount and install a new sliding door in the Casa classroom. Our Elementary Courtyard received a turf repair, and, thanks to The Walter J. Blackburn Foundation, new shade sails to extend the season on using this space. Waterloo Toddler & Casa received a beautiful new fence around their yard. We are continuing to work on the Elevator project at Oxford St., to allow for greater accessibility in this space, and this will continue through the fall. Just a reminder that if you are accessing this building, you need to enter the playground from the parking lot side, walk through the yard and enter the building from the front door that faces Oxford St.

Our new Vision, Mission and Values

Over many months last year, we undertook this project to refresh our Vision, Mission and Values statements, gathering information and insights from many members of our current school community, alumni students and families as well as our Board. Watch for an incredible video in next week’s Buzz to see what is guiding us into the future.

Launch of our new app for Parents

We have been testing our new app all summer and there are a few more kinks we need to work out before it is ready for the full release. We hope to launch it in November and will provide all the details on how to get it, what to subscribe to in order to get the notifications you want, and all the key features you will love to use!

Upcoming New Parent Orientation sessions

We are hosting a number of parent meetings this week and next for those who are new to the school or level your child is entering, so be sure to set these in your calendar:
  • New Casa Parent Info Session – Today – Tuesday, Aug. 27 at 3 p.m.
  • New UE Parent Info Session – Wednesday, Aug. 28 at 3 p.m.
  • New to LE Parent Info Session – Thursday, Aug. 29 at 3 p.m.
  • New to JH Parent Info Session – Thursday, Sept. 5 at 8 a.m.
We look forward to hearing all about your summer adventures, reconnecting with you and getting your children settled into their classroom routines. As Maria Montessori said, “the children of today will make all the discoveries of tomorrow” and we are so grateful to guide them along, while they make their own discoveries throughout their educational journey this year.
All the best,
Tina Brown
Executive Director

Roadwork/paving on Waterloo Street

We’ve been staring at pylons along Waterloo Street all summer long, and paving finally started near the school today. We hope it is done this week, however, it may not be completed by the first day of school on Tuesday. Unfortunately, we do not often get a heads-up from the city about these types of projects. We thank you in advance for your patience and care navigating this road work if it is still in progress.
